How CVD Lab-grown Diamonds are Grown
In CVD, a thin slice of diamond — called a seed — is placed in a sealed chamber. A carbon-rich gas mixture is then introduced into the chamber, and the gas is ionized into a plasma with microwave energy, heating the gas to over 3000°C. The chemistry created in the plasma along with the high temperature, releases carbon atoms that adhere to the crystal structure of the diamond seed and replicate it.
